“Stop worrying about what you have to lose and start focusing on what you have to gain”

Chapter 1

I was running, through the dark forest. All I could hear was this loud, high pitched beep in my ears and I was chased by a dark creature. My heart pumped in the background of the loud beep. I ran slower and slower as I got more tired for each step and after a few seconds I collapsed, crying as I got surrounded by dark dust. Then, I woke up.

I opened my eyes, looking around in the room. I was breathing heavily, sweat running down my face as I sat up quickly. I kept dreaming this nightmare every night and I couldn’t understand why, was this place enchanted or have I just gone mad? I groaned as the prisoner sleeping in the bed under mine was moving so the whole bed was shaking, the prison I was now living in after trying to kill two girls was now going to be my home forever after the decision the boss made. Apparently, six months weren’t enough to torture me even though they treated me like just a fly in this prison.

I laid back down on my bed, waiting for the guards to come in and wake us up for breakfast. After five minutes, as the clock turned eight they came in, one guard for each bed. Me and the man under me, a 45 year old man that was going to be released in a week since the only crime he did was selling weed, got out of our beds. I jumped down on the ground, receiving my clothes for the day. A marine blue, outwashed t-shirt and green pants, like everyday except that they washed our clothes each day.

I quickly went off for breakfast, walking alone as no one here really accepted me. I sighed quickly, taking my plate of food as I reached the kitchen counter. Today’s breakfast was simple, a few slices of bacon and a cold, toasted slice of bread with a thin layer of butter and no juice or coffee, just a cold glass of water. I sat down by a table in the corner of the room, slowly starting to eat as one of the guards came up to my table, looking down at me. “Hans Ericsen?” He said, I looked up, raising an eyebrow, what would they want from me? “Yes, sir?” I said, standing up as he smiled, looking at me. “You and the others in your house of the prison are free today. The doors to the outside are open too” He said, he had probably walked around and told everyone that without me noticing. “Thank you, sir” I shouted, to seem strong for the others as I sat down, finishing my breakfast quickly.

We weren’t really allowed to be outside in the winter, but as the guards wanted to give us some rest they decided to let us out. But I was the only one wanting to go out as the others didn’t want to go out in the icy cold snow that was covering the big area around the prison. I grabbed the thin winter jacket that I got in the “starter kit” that I got as I went to the prison for the first time, I put on a pair of boots that I found under my neighbours bed and then I went off to go outside. I almost ran through the corridors, smiling as I reached the doors, opening them slowly. The sunlight hit my face for the first time for almost three months, making me blinded for a while. Then, as I got used to the strong light I stepped out into the snow. I ran around in it, kicking the powderlike ice around me. I suddenly got so happy, happy to be free for a little while and to feel the sunlight on my face.

As I stopped I hear a woman laugh behind me, I gasped, there weren’t any females in this prison? I turned around and I saw a woman, a bit shorter than me, she had big blue eyes and long blonde hair that was braided to the side of her shoulder. She was wearing a light blue winters coat, with real fur on the sides and she had crystal white boots on her feet. I smiled at her, I knew who she was. It was the boss’s daughter, Elsa Hansen. She would visit our prison before, meeting us prisoners and talking with us. She was only one year younger than me, but she looked like she was older.

She was now currently at the hospital that was near the prison due to if anyone of us prisoners got hurt, she had got some sort of cancer just a few weeks ago and I knew that she was taking walks around the prison to find the chance to maybe see one of us. The prisoners that she should fright, but she didn’t, because she saw us a friends, not enemies to the society. I smiled at her, I walked up to the fence to see her closely. I liked this girl, she was so narrow and cute but she was still acting like a real lady. She smiled at me, I knew that she somehow liked me, like she was the only one in this world who saw me as something nicer than an “almost murderer”.

As I approached to the fence she stuck her hand inside of her coat, I raised an eyebrow. I knew that I weren’t allowed to talk to people outside the fence so I kept quiet, she took out a small envelope, it was light blue with a silver snowflake on the back of it. She stuck it through the wires of the fence, smiling as she nodded at it like I was supposed to take it. I grabbed it, pulling it to my side of the fence as I looked confusedly at it, she just kept smiling at me. I whispered “Thank you” and she winked at me before she turned around to walk away.

I looked at her as she walked away, inspecting her from head to toe. She was truly beautiful and I was really curious of what she had written to me. Was she trying to give me some sort of secret message or was she just too shy to talk to me in person when she visited the prison like she did to the other prisoners. I shrugged as I returned into the prison, I walked up to my bed again, climbing up on it after I’ve got undressed and then I slowly opened the envelope. At first I pulled out a thin piece of paper, covered in text that was written with a light blue pencil. Was this family totally crazy about the colour light blue? I sat up more on the bed, reading the letter slowly:

“Dear Prisoner

I’m sorry for never speaking with you as I’ve been visiting the prison. As you probably know, my name is Elsa Hansen. I haven’t got the chance to talk with you since my dad has forbid me to. He says that he’s afraid of that I will fall in love with you, which I unfortunately have. You seem so sweet and like a caring guy, and if I could, I would love to learn more about you. Learn more about why you actually decided to try to kill those girls. If you want to keep in touch with me then you should be at the fence every friday after breakfast, with a paperplane ready with your letter so we easily can exchange letters without anyone noticing. I love you, Prisoner.

Yours sincerely, Elsa.”
