Kul! Här är prologen!

Prologue: My Guard Falls

Someone's unpleased screech broke the silence in the building. Probably the entire population of New York City heard it. The ten-years-old Barney Stinson ran to his bedroom and hid under the sheets. He prayed that she wouldn't come here. He cried ceaselessly and his body shivered in fear when he heard the door open. The woman he hated walked past him, and just as he thought it was over, she turned around and slapped him right on the cheek. The burning pain made him feel sick and he thought he was just about to throw up when he felt her grab his hair and pull him towards her. Her breath smelled like alcohol and her eyes were terrifying as they stared at him with pure fury. "What the hell were you thinking?" she whispered, voice full of rage. Barney shivered again and shook his head.

"Please don't hit me again," he cried, aware of that she wouldn't listen to his wishes. She would hit him again, even harder than last time. The only thing he wanted was to be normal, and not have a violent mom. He wanted a perfect life, though he knew he couldn't have it.

His mom rocked him back and forth a few times. "Do you think this is your house? Do you think you can just sit there and let me waste my money on you? Well, you can't. Do you know how perfect my life could have been without you? You do know that you have ruined my life, do you?" Barney nodded. He knew how desperately they both wanted different lives than they already had, and he knew how painful it was. "If I want to hit you, I do it. End of discussion."

"But …"

He wouldn't finish before she hit him again, this time on his ribs. It hurt like crazy and he cried even more. He wanted to stand up for himself, tell his mom that she couldn't treat him like that, that physical abuse was illegal in Manhattan. But there was no way he'd be brave enough. He'd just chicken out. He could only tell her that in his dreams.

"You son of a bitch!" she yelled. Then it hit Barney.

"What does that make you, then?"

"Don't you dare get cocky! You're just a stupid little kid, and …"

"Why don't you love me like my friends moms do?" Barney shouted. He wanted to hug his mom, like a normal kid would do when they cried. But he had no mom. He was Cinderella and his mom was the vicious stepmother, constantly pushing him away from any kind of happiness. If he wanted to go to the royal ball to dance with the princess, she wouldn't let him, even without any stepsiblings. Her only life-goal was to make his life miserable, at least that's what it felt like.

She shook her head. "You are unbelievable," she said, annoyance in her eyes. "Who would love someone like you? Your friends may be worth loving. I don't even know how it's possible for you to have friends! You certainly don't deserve it." Silence. This was even worse than all the hitting. Well, maybe this was hitting. Her words hit Barney right in his heart. He was fine with being yelled at or being punched, but those words was like a two hundred-pound wrecking ball right in his stomach. He felt the knot digging deeper inside his belly, it made tears roll down his cheeks in silence, because this wasn't physical. This was bullying.

He looked his mom in the eyes. "I'm done with this. You may be right, but if you don't want me, I won't be bothering you."

He crawled down, and left the house. Walking down the street with tears in his eyes was one of the worst moments in his entire life. No one missed him, no one wanted him around, and no one would even care if he died in this very moment. Knowing that was terrible.

Maybe there was a way out of all this? He glanced at the road next to him. Cars were really heavy. If he got it by one, he'd probably die. He'd just let God take care of him in his next life. Someone who actually loved him without a doubt. For a little boy whom never had experienced love before, that was a seductive thought. It sounded so simple in his head. But when he prepared himself to run out on the road, he just fell down on the street and cried his eyes out. There had been a lot of crying this night, but not as much as this. The only thing he wanted was a normal family, was that too much to ask? "I want my mom," he whispered, voice shaking.

He felt a pat on his shoulder and turned around, almost jumping up in shock. What he saw was a man, a really old man, with a warming smile and somehow keen eyes. "How are you, son?" he asked as if they'd known each other for years. He had a British accent which made him sound polite, somehow. Or maybe it was just the eyes that made him look so kind?

"Um, I'm fine, Sir," Barney shuddered, finding his voice shaky. "Just fine."

"Are you sure?"

Barney let his tears out. "No!" he screamed and suddenly hugged the old man. He didn't seem to mind, but this was new to Barney. He hadn't gotten a hug in years, and he found it wonderful. He felt safe, in the arms of a complete stranger, ironically.

"What's with your mom?" the old man asked. Barney wanted to answer, explain every detail of his life, but he decided not to. It could cause trouble, and that was the least thing he wanted right now.

He decided to turn the question away. "What makes you think there's something with my mom, Sir?"

Oh man, those eyes. "I just know," he said, smiling. What was it about him that made Barney willing to trust him with his life?

Barney turned silent. He stopped crying, stopped sniffling, and just turned silent. He thought it was for the best. Or else he'd probably tell the man every little secret of his. And that was probably not the best idea. He didn't want to reveal anything about her that could get her into trouble. She'd hate him for it. And he knew how she reacted when she hated someone. He was awfully familiar with that.

But of course, his guard fell again. "I just hate her!" he shrieked surprisingly. "She always makes sure my life's a mess. She hates me! And I hate her! I don't want to be here. I want to die. Sir, can you hit me? I deserve it. Hit me so hard I'll bleed to death. Go on."

The man didn't hit him. What he did was to grab his hand, tell him to be prepared and everything started to spin around. The skyscrapers disappeared, and there was nothing left around them but pictures, on different places in different times. Barney felt sick. Was this magic? Was this man … a wizard? No, he couldn't be. Wizards don't exist. What happened exactly? He tried to open his mouth, but no words came out. He could still feel the tight grip on his wrist, so it was probably not a dream.

The pictures started to get clearer and it finally landed on one of them. It was a road, not in the city nor the countryside. Barney had never seen such a place before. "Um, excuse me Sir," he pulled the old man's coat, "but where are we exactly?"

"In England, my friend."

ledsen att det tog tid och för den dåliga engelskan men här är kapitel 1

Chapter I
My mind blows

Amy and Patrick Granger were two dentists living in England, with one daughter, Hermione Granger. They lived in a two-floor terraced house with a small, but beautiful garden. They were also Barney's guardians, ever since he got here a year ago. He loved being in a regular family, after all the things that happened in New York with his so called "mother". He didn't think of her as a mother anymore, not now once he knew what a real mother was like.

He loved everything with being regular. He even loved his stepsister, though she was quite annoying when she corrected you all the time. But that's just a part of her that he had to deal with. And it was truly worth it.

"Barney! Breakfast!" his sister yelled. He yawned.

"Be there in a minute!" he yelled back, and closed the book he was reading at the moment. He was quite hungry, actually.

"What's for breakfast?" he yawned and sat down at the table. He reached for a sandwich, and was just about to get his first bite of it when his stepmother spoke.

"Today its one year since little Barney came to our home, isn't that right, honey?" Barney thought about it, and nodded. That could be true.

"Well we should celebrate!" said Patrick. "Maybe go to the zoo?"

"The zoo!" Barney and Hermione clapped their hands and looked at each other, excited for this new experience. Barney had never been to the zoo even once – his mother never let him. She told him that it was boring and nothing but gross smells and noisy animal sounds. Barney never believed in that. His best friend back there, Ted, told him that the zoo was amazing and something super funny. You could tell Barney was excited to do this.

"When?" Barney asked, flattered that they even wanted to celebrate him. He got the same feeling when they celebrated his birthday. He'd never celebrated a birthday before, and here he was, with a new family that got to know him only a year ago. "Today?"

"Yes, Barney dear, today," Amy said and looked at her husband. "At noon?"

"Noon's fine," Patrick said while reading his newspaper.

"What do you do at a zoo? You just watch animals squeak?" Barney asked, curious.

Hermione raised her arm before she realized that this was a breakfast table and not a school desk. She put it down, embarrassed, and spoke. "Oh, it's lovely! You can watch the animals play with each other, read about them, and eat ice cream and candyfloss ..."

"What's candyfloss?"

"It's like spun sugar, very sweet and light," Amy explained.

Barney actually had that once. It was really good. "Isn't that called cotton candy?"

The other ones around the table laughed a little. "Oh, you're American, right, we forget that sometimes, darling," Amy said and giggled. "Some more tea?"

"Yes, please," Barney replied.

---

So it was settled. The little family went down to the zoo a couple of hours later. It was louder than Barney expected, and that was not caused by the animals. Humans yelled and made loud noises everywhere, and it was frustrating. Though he enjoyed being there, especially with this family. He and Hermione ran from animal to animal and ate a lot of cotton candy – though Hermione frequently told him that it's candyfloss in the UK. He didn't listen though.

They suddenly found their parents watching some bird just as they were about to search for them. Both of them out of breathe, they said in unison: "C-can we have some ice-cream?" Amy and Patrick laughed a little and gave them five pounds each to buy whatever they wanted, including souvenirs. Barney found this little balloon with a cute little parrot saying "Kids love zoo!" And Barney couldn't agree more.

He wanted to watch the snakes, so the little family walked to the snake zone. There was this really big Boa constrictor behind a wall of glass, and Barney got nearly obsessed with it. He watched it for what felt like hours, but it was probably no more than ten minutes. Anyhow, the strangest thing happened as he was watching it. Well, he wasn't alone watching it, there was this black-haired boy there as well, and some blond, fat dork who knocked unkindly on the glass repeatedly to try to force the snake to move. Then, as soon as the blondie left, the black-haired boy started to talk to the snake, and it was not in English. It was some kind of whisper, like the zzz-noise snakes make, and some strange words like "hayeezzawasssiineeessss". And oddly, the snake seemed to understand. Barney couldn't take his eyes of what happened. He felt different, almost scared as he watched the black-haired boy. Was this happening? Was this just a little kid trying to talk to a snake? Maybe Barney only tricked himself to believe that the snake understood.

Though the black-haired boy was about the same age, Barney felt a lot older than him. The boy was tiny and short, and Barney was quite tall for his age. The boy had round glasses and shiny, green eyes, and if you looked closely, you could see a scar on his forehead formed like the lightning. His clothes were way too large and pretty awful.

Barney wasn't really aware of what happened, but as soon as the blondie came back, the glass disappeared and there, in the cage, was now the blondie, sitting in the water crying. Did the workers put the glass down or something? He almost laughed a little when the blondie sat there in the water, totally confused. It was only the workers! thought Barney, though he didn't understand why they would do such a thing since it was a dangerous snake inside. Oh right, the snake ...

As soon as the snake understood it was free to leave, it crawled up the little tree and continued its journey down the wall. Barney let out a little scream. He ran away as quickly as he could, looking for Hermione. He heard someone else scream, and when he looked back, he saw that the glass was now back again, which made the blondie now stuck. The poor kid yelled for his mother and his mother yelled back – but the boy from earlier sat on the floor, laughing. What was it with this boy?

"Hermione! Hermione!" Barney called, trying to find his stepsister. Where could she be?

Not much later, he found her watching the spectacle as well. She told him she'd just gotten here and found a Boa constrictor between her legs. Barney couldn't resist to giggle a little. He was eleven, and you know how they make inappropriate jokes all the time.

"It's not funny, Barney!" Hermione shouted, offended.

"Yes it is," Barney twittered.

"No it's not. And it's never going to be whatsoever. God, you're childish," Hermione said, turning away.

"And you're boring."

"Barney! Hermione! Thank God you're safe!" Patrick yelled. "We just heard what happened. We can't let you two be here with a snake around. What's the matter, you've been fighting? No time to waste, we need to get out of here now!"

"But I want to watch the snake," Barney protested.

"Well, you can't, because everybody else here are at least the slightest mature," Hermione snorted and walked over to her parents. So did Barney, unpleased. Why couldn't his sister be fun for once?

"You know, Hermione," he said. "Just because you're one year older it doesn't mean that you're the most mature."

"No, but my behaviour does," she replied.

---

But when he and his stepsister fought, it never lasted long. They made up as soon as they got back home. It was by then somewhere around five o'clock. Patrick immediately went to the kitchen to make dinner, and Amy helped the children to clean their room. It had gotten pretty messy lately. At least that's what she said. Barney found it cosy.

"Oh, please, Amy, do we have to?" he begged, looking at her with puppy eyes.

"I told you, I'll help you," she responded, annoyed. "Oh, look, what have we got here? Let's see, I'll take time and see if you can clean the floor up within thirty seconds. Ready ..."

"But you said ..."

"Go!"

"Okay, challenge accepted," Barney yelled, picking up a piece of Lego from the floor. It was irresistible to say no to such a simple task.

---

Barney was full. Happy. Warm. Beloved. He didn't know if he needed anything else in the world. He lie in his bed, looking out the window. He saw an owl sitting on a branch. Owls were fascinating. He liked owls. This one was brown and beautiful. Perhaps it was the light, but it looked like it sparkled in the moonlight. Barney closed his eyes, thinking that the owl would watch him during his sleep.

Then he heard the owl knock on the window.
