Epilogue

65 years later…


Amy walks in to the room, slowly, carrying the glass of water and the bottle of pills. Her steps are quiet, but of course that doesn’t matter.
“Honey?”
Niall’s grunts something not audible, and then opens his eyes slowly. Amy shakes away her grey hair from my face and smiles weakly at him. He just looks at her, looking quite pleased with his view.

You gave me wings, and taught me to fly
When I was out there on my own

“I have your medicine”, Amy tells him, and he sighs. She puts down the bottle and the glass on the night-stand and sits down at the edge Niall’s bed, slowly. Then she looks at Niall with a mixed feeling of love, pity and worry on her face.
“How are you feeling?”
Niall sighs again, but smiles weakly. “I’ve been better”.

Amy nods. “Okay”.
The silence fills the air, and the only thing that you can hear is Niall’s quick breaths. He grips Amy’s hand, his shaking lightly.
She smiles sadly to him, knowing what’s happening. “You are not going to take the pills, are you?”

You gave me wings
And brought me to life

Niall shakes his head slowly. “It’s time”.
Amy shakes her head fasts, and squeezes Niall’s hand even harder. “You have said that before, why should I believe you this time?”
Niall’s smile is weak, and he can barely lift his head from his pillow when he kisses Amy’s hand softly. “You know it’s time, Ames”, he says softly, like she’s the one someone needs to look after.
The tears are prickling behind Amy’s eyelids now, but she’s not letting that affect her strict face. “I’m not letting you go”.
Niall smirks and raises his eyebrows. “Wanna bet on that sweetie?”
She lets out a shaky laugh and then shakes her head.

“Stop it Niall, your not dying”.
“But I am”.

Niall’s breaths are now quicker, shorter and more superficial than before. He rests his head back at his pillow.
And then it finally sinks into Amy’s head.
“Oh God”, she mumbles, and tries to blink away the tears from her eyes again. “You said you wouldn’t leave me”.
Niall looks at his loved wife with a sad and worried face, and she continues talking, her voice rising.
“You said you would stay with me!”
Niall shakes his head. “I’m not leaving you, Amy”, he mumbles, closing his eyes to block away the head-ache he’s getting.
“Oh, really? Because in my point of view, it really looks like you are leaving me. You are leaving me here all alone!”
Niall shakes his head again, opens his eyes again and meets Amy’s gaze. “If you are scared of being alone, then come with me”.

And now I need to know
If you want to fly?
Cause I want to fly

Amy looks at him doubtfully while quickly wiping away the tears from her cheeks.
“It doesn’t work that way”.
“I promise you”, Niall says, holding into Amy’s hand even harder. “If you really want to, you can come with me.”

Tell me you’re down
For touching the sky

It takes about five seconds before Amy makes her mind about the choice she’s facing.
She climbs into the bed, surprisingly alert for an 83-year-old.
She lies down next to Niall, and wraps her arms around his waist, hugging him tight.
“You don’t want to go to the hospital?”
Niall shakes his head. “I’m pretty tired of hospitals”.
“Should I call the kids?” Amy asks, even though she knows that she wont ever go our from this room, scared that he’ll leave her when she’s gone. “Or Louis or Zayn? They maybe want to be here”.

Niall shakes his head again. “I don’t want them to see this”, he mumbles, his voice sounding so tired and weak.
“So it’ll only be you and me”, Amy mumbles into his hair.
Niall nods, agreeing. “Only me and you”.

You and me, me and you
The higher the better

Amy’s grip around Niall tightens even more, and she gives him a kiss on the cheek. He smiles, even though she can’t see him from behind.

He looks out over the large bedroom he and Amy have shared for the last fifty years. A lot of pictures are hanging on the wall, pictures from their time together. Niall doesn’t even have to look closer to know what every single picture is from, and from who it is taken.
His gaze lands on one of the biggest photo. It’s hanging in the middle, and every time he looks at it he gets this perfect feeling in his stomach.
It’s a picture of Amy, laughing and showing of her perfect teeth’s. She’s looking into the camera, even though she’s wearing sun-glasses. She’s driving, and they both remember that day like it was yesterday.


“What are you doing, Niall?”
“I’m storing some perfection”.
“You took a picture of me!”
“Exactly, that’s what I said”.


“What are you thinking about?” Amy whispers into Niall’s ear, and he squeezes her hand lightly.
“I’m thinking about the day I proposed to you”.
Amy smiles at the memory. “That was an amazing day”.
“Mhm…”

Niall’s sigh is almost no audible, but Amy hears it. She ignores the tears that are still rolling down her cheeks. He’s leaving her. He is really leaving her.

Niall is counting the last, golden seconds he has left. He thinks about how he met Amy, and the tour. He thinks about the farm they then bought, and their beautiful wedding. He thinks of the kids they raised together, and how some of the people they loved the most left them. And now it’s their turn.

When we fly we fly together
Together, together, together, together

Niall’s grip is weakening. This is it.
“I love you Niall”, Amy mumbles into his ear, and he nods his head slowly.
She can hear his quiet, light chuckle that never fails to brighten her day. “I’ll see you soon, Amy”, he then mumbles.

And just as he says that, both of them let go of everything and leaves the world together, hand in hand, without looking back once.

When we fly we fly together…
