Spoiler:

Part 1 of Chapter one - Corridors

"Oh shit."
The guard squinted out into the darkness beyond the light of the few homes scattered outside the edge of the city.
"What is it?" Another guard stepped away from her post to join her partner in his staring.
"I just, hmm," The first guard's eyes scanned the grey rocky ground in front of him. "I thought that I saw something move."
"Oh." The second guard breathed out silently and grasped her gun tighter while backing up against the red stone wall, the only protection for the small part of the city they guarded. She calmly stared into the darkness, but she knew that her night vision wasn't as good as her companion.
"Do you think it was an animal?" she whispered.
"I don't know, but it looked pretty big." They both stood silently for several minutes, but when nothing more out of the ordinary moved the first guard started to relax a little, but his eyes were still moving anxiously. "We might need to station more guards here on the next shift."
His companion chuckled.
"Like they have the manpower to guard the smallest gate!" She scoffed. "It's just you and me protecting this part of town, brother."
He grinned "Yeah I guess so. Still, the risk of an invasion right now is pretty high and two lonely guards are easy prey."
"That's the thrill of this job. Anyways, you can always file a complaint to the office about an insufficient work force after you get mauled to death by the Hunters." Her tone was sarcastic, but her face bitter.
"Oh don't start again-"
"Hey, I'm just sayin'!" she blurted out a little too loud, making her comrade give her an angry glance. She gave him an awkward grin and a shrug before continuing with a lowered but still passionate tone.
"If I was captain, I would actually get shit done, like actually enlisting every single person willing to fight for their lives in the city." She puffed out her chest and straightened her back. "With a army on my side I shall banish those pesky Hunters from this planet, and lead our race to a definitive victory! Also I am very loveable and would keep the morale very high, unlike our very intimidating current Cap, who will be my second in command." Her pointy ears perked upwards as she grinned assurdely out into the unimpressed darkness.
"Ye 'course brother." The first guard didn't turn towards her, but she could clearly see his amused smirk at her speech. They guarded in friendly silence the rest of the night, all while the four moons travelled across the sky over them.

Part 2 of Chapter 1 - Corridors
"Wh-wait! Captain!" The young guard hurriedly followed his commander, his clomping steps echoing through the cold stone corridors. He had just arrived back from a long night shift, and his partner had just gone to bed for the day. For a while he had been standing alone in the corridor outside the sleeping chambers, nervously fiddling with several old maps filled with scratchy notes made for himself, when he suddenly heard the opening and closing of a door and a white figure started moving further down the corridor. He picked up all the bravery he had and started to gallop towards his captain.
The captain was almost double the soldiers height and from behind she looked like a wall of thick white hair. Her skin was dark and looked like stone, She had been protecting this town for almost half a century, all while the population and soldiers had been decreasing due to the relentless attacks from the Hunters. None was ever injured under her watch, but a growing fear led to a lot of people deciding to leave with their families before their demise was inevitable. The guard had heard stories about her ever since he was little, and it was still a bit hard to talk to her in the flesh. She was an icon, a hero, someone that was probably right about most things and knew a lot.
Today, he had to advise her to not make a fatal mistake.
"Captain," he said again, his steps slowing down as he approached her and a seriousness growing in his tone. "Captain, we need to talk."
The captain's sudden stop almost made the guard run into her. She turned her head towards him.
"What is it, guard?"
Her almost jet black eyes glistened as she looked at the guard. Those eyes alone made the guard second-guess this encounter for the hundredth time, but he carried on.
"Captain, I am one of the guards stationed at the north-western gate and I and my partner has been guarding it for almost two quarts now ."
"Is this about a promotion, because that is not my job, guard." Her tone was sharp. The guard lifted his hands in a defensive gesture.
"N-no, sorry, it's not like that at all, I'm so sorry, I'm not good with words." He took a deep breath and tried to calm down. The captain was still only turned halfway towards him and she slowly started to walk again.
"Whatever it is, you can just report it to the office's, they can take care of-"
"No."
The captain halted and turned around to face her subordinate.
"Excuse me?" Her tone was now ice cold, and she directly met the gaze of the guard. He stared at her tensely, his hands and tone were shaking, but she could see a deep determination in his eyes.
"Sorry but this is really-REALLY important, and I need to talk to you-you-YOU, captain, not the god's damned o-o-office. I have reason to believe that the Hunters will attack us soon."
"What are you saying?" Her voice was low but not as demanding as before.
"Cap, I've got some i-inside information."
The captain fell quiet for a moment, her stone cold gaze piercing through the guard's skin.
Then she sighed.
"Alright, you seem to be honestly worried about something. I'll give you one chance," She turned around "if you show up at my office tomorrow before your first shift, I will listen to you."
The guard breathed out and let his tense shoulders drop a little.
"Thank you."
"Do not thank me yet. Also, what is your name, guard?"
He straightened his back a little, even though she wasn't facing him anymore.
"Alexander Lirschen."
"Oh, so you're the one with a human name?"
"Well, ye-ye-yes. My parents are archeologists."
"Hmm." The captain started walking down the corridor as Alexander stood watching her.
"Well, Alexander, go back to the sleeping quarters for now."She called out before disappearing inside her office.

"Hey, Ale!"A voice hushed from the sleeping cove over Alexander. He quietly slipped into the bed before answering.
"Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"You just disappeared right after our shift, I was curious. A grey head with large blue-ish eyes and bent pale orange horns dropped down from the cove over Ale. He stared annoyed at her.
"Pan, would you kindly go back to your own bed I am trying to sleep here."
"Not before you tell me what you and the captain where screaming about in the corridor." She cocked her to the side trying to look cool but just managed to hit her forehead right onto the stone wall.
"Aw feck-"
"See, go back to bed now and I'll tell ya about all this tomorrow night!"
She pouted. "Alright, if you say so, Crooked-teeth."
With a grin her head retired to her own bed. Alexander pulled the blanket over his eyes, trying to ignore all the pictures that flew around in his head.
If he was wrong about all this, the meeting with the Captain would definitely get him discharged from the military forever.
Or worse, if what he suspected really was true and the Captain found out how he was given that information.
He would suffer endless torture for the rest of his life.

Part 1 of Chapter 2 - Truth be told
The pointy stick hit him right in his side.
For a moment he lost all air, but managed to get in another blow at his opponent.
Left side, block, right side, block, duck, jump, head, duck, block.
The fighting exercises were boring and repetitive. By far the worst part of being in the military, according to Ale. Why they even did this was a mystery to him. From what he had heard, Hunters kill from a distance.
While Ale's thoughts were trailing off, his fighting partner hit him straight in the head. Ale fell backwards, hitting his back hard into the stone ground.
"Oi, are you okay?" The other soldier reached out his hand to help Ale, but he refused it, instead slowly raising himself up from the ground with shaking arms. Right at that moment, his troup commander marched by. At the sight of the beat up Ale, he stopped and lowered his bushy eyebrows in displeasure.
"Alexander, what are you doing tasting the dirt!"
"I'm sorry Com, Rin here is very good at aiming." Rin, his fighting partner, looked up, a bit flustered.
The Com snorted.
"You've never lost to her! Something occupying your mind, young one?"
"No Com, nothing."
The Com hummed, not convinced.
"You need to step up your game a bit youngling. You're one of my best." Rin lowered her head and hid her blushing. Ale felt a little annoyed.
"Well, maybe it's just not my lucky day today." He said as he jumped up from the ground. "It's not like we're ever going to get into a one-on-one stick fight with the Hunters any time soon, anyways."
The com's expression darkened. He put one finger on Ale's chest and leaned in closer. "We need to be prepared for everything, or we'll become dead meat." He growled. With a small push he pushed Ale into the dirt again. He coughed from the dust filling his lungs. Couldn't the commander just leave him and Rin be?
"I know, Commander." Ale said.
"Then! Show it!" The Commander swiftly turned around and continued marching and sometimes yelling at his soldiers. Ale raised himself with his eyes locked onto the commanders back. The background noise began to fade.

He had no right to do that to you. The Commander was only a regular person. He would definitely have less chance than you in a battle with the Hunters. Oh you bet you could easily beat him right here. To show him . Oh how wonderful that would be.

"Alexandria? Alexandria! Snap out of it!"
Ale shook his head. He was standing a few steps from Rin, who had called out to him. Before him stood the commander, his eyebrows raised in shock and his hands raised defensively. Ale had stopped mid step, his jaw clenched with his teeth showing as if he had snarled. His hands were tightly wrapped around his training weapon.
The yard was dead silent. Everyone were staring at him. He turned around and is blank stare met with Rin's wide eyes and her quivering lower lip.
"Are you okay?" She asked with a shaky tone, taking a small step forward. "You look exhausted."
"What?" Ale raised his hand to brush away his hair, but when he raised the training staff Rin backed up again. The soldiers on the yard began muttering.
"Alexandria, put that down." She used his full name. No one ever used his full name.
"Rin? What?" Rin's expression changed from frightful to sympathetic, but she didn't come any closer to him.
"You almost passed out." The commander's defensive posture was gone and his voice hard when Ale turned around. He took four steps towards Ale. Their gazes met and for a brief moment, Ale could sense hostility from his eyes. His closed fist twitched a little.
"It could just be that you're sick. Go to the healers quarters, immedaitely."
Rin walked up to Ale and put a hand on his shoulder, lightly grasping it and making him focus on her.
"Let's get you away from here." She said as she gently started to lead him away from the bustling courtyard. As she lead him into a small corridor he caught a glimpse of the commander still staring at him. His expression was stone cold and Ale felt a chill run down his spine.
What did he do?
"Hey, hey, focus on me now." Rin's gentle voice kept his thoughts from trailing off. He felt dizzy and disoriented, as if something had put all his senses underwater. For every step the stone floor under him faded. Suddenly his eyes were blinded by an ungodly whiteness and his nose filled with a fresh smell. Rin's presence disappeared moments before his senses completely shut down, giving away to a comfortable darkness.

Ale woke up with a horrible headache. As he slowly sat up the sterile air and silence made it clear that he wasn't in his usual sleeping cove. A voice called out to him when he tried to step out of the bed.
"Hey, lay still!" A large figure appeared before him and gently pushed him back into the soft pillows.
"I'll need to examine you, ok?" He didn't recognise the voice, but was entirely too tired to care.
The figure started to examine him with gentle hands.
"Can you tell me your first name?"
"Uuh," he shook his head and blinked rapidly. "A-alexandria."
"Great. What's the name of your captain?"
" Vernia?"
"And can you remember the city's name?"
The nurse was done with the examination and sat down on a stool next to Ale's bed.
"Redcove." He looked at the nurse. "I'm sorry, but what am I doing here?"
"You were rushed here yesterday by another guard. She told me that you had acted weird when you trained," they paused and looked down at a small notepad. "and it seems like you'd gotten a sudden fever."
"Oh, alright." Ale checked his forehead. "Well I don't feel hot anymore."
"That's because we treated you!" The nurse stood up and shook their head. "Oh why are all you soldiers so slow?" They walked over to a desk and wrote down something. "Well, all it took really was some pills and a good night's sleep. It was probably just the stress getting to you." For some reason, Ale felt that the nurse was lying, but he couldn't set his finger on what.
"I'll be more careful in the future," he replied and smiled as the nurse picked up a bottle, teared out the written note and gave it to Ale.
"Now, you better get going and report for duty. If you start feeling dizzy or hot again, just take one pill and get some sleep, alright?"
"Understood." Ale took the bottle and note. "But what's the note about?"
"Just a small report for Vernia. Please go to her office immediately and give it to her."
Ale nodded and got out of the bed. He gave a small bow toward the nurse.
"Thank you." The nurse just lifted their hand and gave him a wave to get going.
"No need! Just go."
The stone corridor outside was considerably hotter than the healer's room. As Ale walked to the Captain's office his mind was drifting.
What was the nurse hiding? It was clear to him that they had lied. When they were writing in the notepad something made them smell of... Was it fear? Or just caution? He couldn't really tell, but when they turned around to get the pills they seemed to try to hide what they felt. Could it be that he was sicker than they dared to mention? ¨
No, that's really stupid. If he was that ill, they wouldn't have let him go right after waking up.
Was she scared of him for some reason?
The thought made him stop as he recalled what happened yesterday. Rin and the Com had also smelt of fear yesterday. But, that doesn't make sense. Oh for all that is holy what does this mean.
"Shit better get going." Ale murmured as he realised that he was just standing there. "Maybe I can talk to Pan about it later." He quickened his pace and let the thoughts slip away for now.

---

"-and then I went to the Cap's office, but she wasn't there, so I just left the note outside." Pan and Ale were once again standing outside the red wall underneath the shining of the moons. Pan lowered her eyebrows and took a bite out of her bread.
"Well, did you read the note?" She said with crumbs raining around her.
"Dude, no."
"Well, you totally should've."
"Pan, it was just a god damned nurse's note. Surely it wouldn't explain why everyone's feeling weird around me all of a sudden?" He sighed and rested the back of his head on the cold wall.
"It almost certainly had something to do with that," she said. "And what do ya mean 'everyone'?"
Ale covered his face in his hand as he murmured. "After I left the note I went to the sleeping chambers 'cause I was still feeling tired. Every person I met smelt of fear when they saw me."
"What, really? Were they all there when that weird thing happened?"
"No! That's the thing, most of them were from the day patrol so they couldn't have seen what happened that made everyone scared."
Pan licked the last crumbs of her fingers and shook her cold legs.
"So what, rumours spread quickly here. Of course people would talk about it."
Ale groaned. "That doesn't make me feel any better."
"So what Crooked-teeth, I can't lie to you. And I'll just say what I think is going on."
"And what's that exactly?" Ale replied and let his hands fall to look at Pan.
"Well," she said and looked right at him. "it must've been as the nurse said; you got sick from stress and the training made you tired so you snapped at the commander ." She ended the sentence with a loud clap. "That's it."
Ale looked away from her and out into the darkness.
"M-maybe your right." He sighed and stretched. "But it still seems weird."
"Stop being so anxious dude." Pan said. "The thing is that every tiny piece of information will blow up to inproportionate size once people start gossiping. Especially here where everyone just wants to distract themselves from the looming fear of death."
"Geez, that's harsh." But Ale felt a little bit better as she said that. Maybe it was just gossip.
"Of course, it's the harsh truth. And the other harsh truth is that we need to shut up because we've probably been surrounded as this conversation has been going on."
"Oh, right, work." Ale stood up straighter and his mind could finally pay attention to the dark terrain.
"Pffft, damn immature you are, Crooked-teeth." Pan muttered.
